Privacy
App privacy policy
This policy covers the Simple Shot Timer app for Android and iPhone (iOS). What happens when you visit this website is explained in the website privacy policy. The German version is the legally binding one.
Summary
Simple Shot Timer is local-only. It creates no account, sends no data to me or to third parties, and contains no analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs. What the app stores stays with you: on your device and, if you've switched it on, in your phone's own backup.
The app is open source (GPLv3). The code is on GitHub, so you can check for yourself that what's written here is true.

Data the app processes
Stored on your device:
- Timer sessions ("strings"): timestamp, drill mode, delay settings, and optionally a label, notes and a penalty
- Shot timings: position in the session, time in milliseconds, whether added manually
- Settings such as language, history cap and audio thresholds
This lives in a local SQLite database and a preferences file in the app's private storage. I never receive it. If your phone's own backup is switched on (iCloud Backup on iPhone, Google backup on Android), the operating system may include this data in that backup, which stays between you and Apple or Google.
Microphone:
The app needs the microphone to time a string. With your permission, it uses it to detect shots and to hear when the start beep actually plays, so the clock starts on the audible beep. It also uses the microphone in the mic test and in auto-configure when you open them. Audio is analysed in memory only while one of these is running, to measure levels and frequencies. Nothing is recorded, saved or transmitted.
You can grant or revoke the permission at any time in your system settings. Without it the app can't time a string; your history, saved drills and settings stay available.
CSV export:
When you export a session as CSV, the app writes the file to temporary storage and hands it to your system's share dialog. Where it goes from there (e-mail, messaging, cloud storage) is up to the app you pick; I have no involvement in or visibility into that transfer.
Legal basis
- Local storage of sessions and settings: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, as it is needed to provide the feature you use when you start and save a session.
- Microphone access: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, your consent given via the system permission prompt. You can withdraw it at any time in system settings; processing before that remains lawful.
Retention
Your data stays on the device until
- you delete an individual session in the app,
- you use "delete all",
- the configurable history cap prunes the oldest sessions, or
- you uninstall the app.
Temporary export files sit in the system's temp directory and may be removed by the OS at any time.
Recipients and international transfers
I do not receive, host or transmit any of your data. There are no recipients, and because the app itself sends nothing off your device, I make no transfer to third countries under Art. 44 ff. GDPR. A device backup with Apple or Google is something you set up yourself, and their privacy terms apply to it.
Your rights
You have the rights of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21 GDPR). Since all data lives only on your device, you exercise them directly in the app: view, edit, export as CSV and delete sessions. Uninstalling removes everything.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for me is the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Ludwig-Erhard-Straße 22, 20459 Hamburg, Germany.
Permissions
Android:
- Microphone (
RECORD_AUDIO): shot detection, hearing the start beep, the mic test and auto-configure. Needed to time a string; revocable at any time. - Foreground service (
FOREGROUND_SERVICE,FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MICROPHONE) and notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): keep detection and beeps running while a session runs in the background, with the notification Android shows during that time. - Vibration (
VIBRATE): haptic feedback on beeps. - Wake lock (
WAKE_LOCK): keeps the processor awake while a session runs in the background, so detection and beeps don't stop.
Keeping the screen on during a session needs no permission.
iPhone:
- Microphone: shot detection, hearing the start beep, the mic test and auto-configure. The system asks the first time the app needs it (START, the mic test or auto-configure). Needed to time a string; revocable in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Background audio: while a session runs, the app keeps listening and playing beeps when you lock the screen or switch apps. iOS shows the microphone indicator during that time.
Vibration and keeping the screen on need no permission on iPhone.
Children
The app is meant for adults, such as competitive shooters at the range, and is not directed at children under 16. I do not knowingly process children's data.
Changes
When the app changes, I update this policy. The date at the top shows the current version; material changes are announced in the store listings.
